5th July, 1975, exactly 51 years ago a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, attained independence. Cape Verde, a nation with 500k population, will be celebrating their Independence Day tomorrow.

The resurgence of this island nation is an amazing story, however it is in the last 20 days people around the globe started looking at maps, information, and all details about this country. Sports is a great platform to showcase culture and community.

Cape Verde’s football journey has been fantastic. It was in 1986, the year in which Argentina won their second World Cup , Cape Verde officially became a member of FIFA. Who would have thought that 40 years later, this small nation kept the reigning World Champions on the edge. Their rankings were around 130s during the start, the highest was 27th (Feb 2014) and the lowest 182 (2000).

The World Cup journey started for them in 2002 when they first took part in the qualifiers. Cape Verde qualified for their first ever World Cup in 2026. The island nation was ranked 67 at the start of the FIFA WC 2026.

15th June, 2026 Spain Vs Cape Verde , the football lovers across the globe tuned into see the potential winners of WC 2026 playing their opening game. The script was completely rewritten by the islanders. 90 minutes of brilliance from the Blue Sharks ensured the 2010 World Champions could not find the ball in the net. The final score 0-0. The minnows getting a draw became the headlines and Cape Verde, the nation and the players became a sensation.

The image which changed everything.

Before Cape Verde’s knock out match against Argentina, Lopes was relishing the chance to face the world’s best, including Lionel Messi. He finds it surreal that such elite players are now analyzing his team: “You have these like top, top players… and they’re analyzing us… it’s a bit of a surreal feeling” added Pico Lopes while talking to his media team.

The Blue Sharks have made history and have written a new chapter, indeed a historical one. In their debut World Cup appearance, they are unbeaten having played against Spain, the 2010 Champions, Uruguay, the first ever Champions of World Cup in 1930 and Saudi Arabia, the team which defeated Argentina in their first game in 2022 World Cup. In the knock out match against the reigning World Cup Champions , Argentina, it was 1-1 after the regular 90 minutes. Unbeaten in this World Cup in regular time even after playing against the current FIFA 1 and 2 ranked teams. They came back in extra time to make it 2-2 before conceding a 3rd one at 111th minute. This is truly a dream run for Cape Verde.

 “It’s the pinnacle of our sport for me,” Lopes said. “Any young footballer out there… this is what they dream about… to say that I’ve been at a World Cup and competed and we’ve managed to get out of the group… that will bring memories for the rest of my life”.

Cape Verde not only qualified into the knock out rounds, they showcased the world that nothing is impossible. A historic journey for the nation, the team, the manager, support staff and the players. A performance which will not be forgotten by the football lovers. The world will be eagerly waiting for WC 2030 to witness the Sharks back on the world’s biggest footballing stage.

In May 2010 , Cape Verde played a friendly match against Portugal who were ranked 3rd in the world by FIFA at that time. The result , most of you would’ve guessed by now, 0-0. The Blue Sharks have produced many amazing results in their history. In 2025 and 2026 (so far), out of a total of 14 games played, they have only lost one game in the regular 90 minutes.
