2026 FIFA World Cup : The 104 matches football extravaganza kicks off tomorrow : A look at the nations, rankings, players and interesting facts

48 nations, 1,248 players representing 2.2 billion people, will compete and play the beautiful game with a dream to win it.

The curtain raiser to the four years wait for the 23rd edition will happen at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium on the 11th of June, 2026.

(Interesting Fact 1: This is the 3rd time a World Cup inaugural match is happening at the Mexico City stadium, previously in 1970 and 1986)

The 2026 World Cup will witness the new bigger format with 48 teams competing to win the competition. A total of 104 games to decide the ultimate Champions. The traditional footballing powerhouses are all geared up to get a hand on the coveted trophy. Even though this edition saw an additional 16 teams getting added to the group stage , 6 countries who were part of the 2022 World Cup campaign missed out on qualification which includes Cameroon, Costa Rica , Denmark, Poland , Serbia, Wales. The 2026 edition will have 4 nations making their debut performances : Cape Varde , Curacao , Jordan and Uzbekistan. The only previous winner of WC to miss out is Italy, a four times WC winning nation.

Haiti and Congo have previously played in only one WC , in 1974. Both the nations are back after a 52 years gap.

Only 8 nations have won the World Cup so far and will be interesting to see if the 23rd edition of WC has a new name on the Trophy.

The matches will be played in as many as 16 stadiums including 11 in the USA, 3 in Mexico and 2 in Canada spanning across approximately 4500 kms and 4 different time zones.

(Interesting fact 3: Mexico will become the only nation to host / co-host for three times when WC 26 kicks off on 11th June)

The players representing the nations play for 449 clubs in 71 different countries.

(Interesting fact 2: Manchester City with 19 players have the highest representation)

The age difference between the youngest and oldest player in this edition of WC is 25 years.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa are going to have the unique distinction of playing in 6 different World Cup competitions , from 2006 to 2026 , an amazing WC journey across three decades and 5 continents. This might be the last edition where you would continue to see the CR7 vs LM10 debate. The 2018 World Cup was spoken to be the last outing for Messi & Ronaldo however both the footballing stars have found a way to stay on top their games to ensure the fans got to see them in 2022 and now mostly the final outing at the 2026 edition.

With the onset of Artificial Intelligence and the rigorous analysis of data , many platforms have come out with their predictions for this edition. Opta Analyst predicts Spain has a 16% chance of winning followed by France, England and Argentina. Football has always shown that it is never over until the final whistle and it is the hope which will push each team to keep going for the result.

The football extravaganza will kick off on the 11th June when host city Mexico take on South Africa in the WC 26 opening game.

(Interesting fact 4: This is a repeat of WC 2010 opening game)

From then on it is going to be non stop football action for 39 days, and all eyes will be on the finals, the 104th game played on 20th July to see who is the World Cup 2026 Winner.
